NEWSLETTER No. 129 – 27th APRIL 2012

DARWEN CONCERT – message from Phil, posted 1st April 2012. - “Well done! the Stainer went down very well indeed and people were particularly impressed by the expression within God So Loved the World, which I thought was fantastic (among other things). It would have been very easy after the first half to go into the Stainer full of negativity but I think you all recovered wonderfully and our hard work throughout the term has paid off. I had several people come to me after the concert to congratulate us, and more than one commented on the dynamic range of the choir and how you are very good at getting the most from both the loud sections and the quiet sections. This is a comment I whole heartedly agree with, your dynamic range is excellent and it's a feature of your singing that we should always seek to use to its fullest.
It would be very easy for me to concentrate on the negatives of the first half of the concert, however, when all is said and done the only thing that didn't go well was the Byrd Mass - it was a very difficult sing and I think an early blip just knocked confidence a little. I hope that we do perform it again in the future, because I feel we have unfinished business with it! The Lotti was very tight and well sung, and the Arcadelt was beautifully performed.
Thank you all for the effort this evening during the concert (a particularly long concert!) and for your attentiveness and patience throughout the term. Phil”

WEDDING IN JUNE As all will be aware; we had received a provisional booking to sing at a wedding in Whittle le Woods in June.  This has now been cancelled as it is understood that he bride and groom will be using their own church choir.

CATHEDRAL SERVICE  Phil is currently sourcing the music for the two services will be singing in Blackburn Cathedral on Sunday 26th August 2012.  Members will be aware that we will be singing at services at 10.30am and 4.00pm.  The initial plan is that all music will be put together.  Final details as to rehearsal dates have yet to be confirmed and it is hoped that these will be confirmed at the next meeting of the committee on Tuesday 29th May 2012.  Several members have been unable to wait any longer in planning their Annual Holidays and have now made bookings.  I know of one person who will not be returning until late on Saturday the week before the services.

REPERTOIRE COMMITTEE The next meeting of the repertoire committee will take place on Monday 21st May 2012 at Andrea’s with a start time of 8.00pm.  This meeting will be arranging the music for the Christmas concert in Standish on Saturday 15th December 2012.  Any member is invited to attend this meeting or alternatively put forward ideas to either Andrea or David C.

WESTHOLME THEATRE – Martin Roscoe Piano Recital on Wednesday 2nd May 2012 at 7.30pm.  Having had their largest audience for the year at Martin’s concert in 2011, Martin Roscoe contribution to the area and the Ribble Valley International Piano Week held in the theatre in July, they are greatly looking forward to hearing him again.

With more than five hundred broadcasts and seven BBC Prom appearances, his CD’s always receive great critical acclaim, though he can still communicate with young audiences as shown by his masterclass at Westholme last year.  His website diary shows him performing throughout Britain and the world, including a visit to Munich to perform Gershwin Piano Concerto in March.  This concert is presented in association with the Ribble Valley International Piano Week, and tickets will be unreserved with the doors opening at 7.00pm

COMMITTEE MEETING The next meeting of the committee will be held at Andrea’s on Tuesday 29th May at 7.30pm.  It is hoped to confirm the arrangements for the two concerts in July, together with formal details and arrangements for the Cathedral services in August.  Any member wishing to have a matter raised at this meeting should contact Alison or David C.

ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTIONS Paul is anxious to collect the remaining outstanding Annual Subscriptions from several members who have an outstanding account.  Please check with Paul as to the amount that is still due to be paid.

WESTHOLME GALA CONCERT – the final concert in this year’s series of concerts is on Saturday 12th May 2012.  A number of talented Upper Sixth Formers will perform movements from concertos as the climax to their school musical careers:  Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks will be joined by other orchestral pieces and parents and friends of the school are invited to join the Westholme Choral Society to perform Karl Jenkins: Stabat Mater with rehearsals on Bank Holiday Monday 7th May (2.-00pm to 4.00pm), Friday 11th May (7.30pm to 9.00pm) and Saturday 12th May (2.00pm).

This is an open invitation for any of the singers who would like to take part.  For many years, several of our group have thoroughly enjoyed performing in these concerts.  The invitation is open to ladies and gentlemen.

ANNUAL DINNER Plans are now being made for the Annual Dinner with two dates proposed as Friday 6th and 13th July.  Full information will shortly be confirmed.

THE SIXTEEN - This year The Sixteen's Choral Pilgrimage 2012 will tour almost 30 venues around the UK with a programme of music by arguably the three most celebrated composers of the Franco-Flemish school of the Renaissance: Josquin, Brumel and Lassus.  They will visit Blackburn Cathedral on Saturday 26th May 2012 from 7.30pm.

Conductor Harry Christophers says 'The music has a unique sonority which I believe will astound you all - from the depth of expression and fascinating texts of Josquin to the overtly decorative mass movements of Brumel's Missa Et ecce terraemotus. We really do have a wealth of simply glorious music for you which I have no doubt will enrich all our lives.'

Ticket prices range from £10 - £36. To book tickets call the national box office on 01904 651485 and for more information visit www.thesixteen.com.

To accompany this year's tour The Sixteen has recorded all of the repertoire on a new CD entitled 'The Earth Resounds'. The CD is available to purchase direct from The Sixteen's website www.thesixteen.com and also as a Master Quality 96kHz/24-bit and MP3 digital download from www.thesixteendigital.com.
